The Britton-Hecla girls basketball team picked up one win in three starts during the past week and stood at 2-7 heading into a contest with Wilmot on Tuesday night. The Lady Braves outscored Redfield 11-5 in the third period to erase a two-point halftime deficit and held on for a 29-28 win on Thursday but dropped a 58-12 decision at Milbank last Tuesday and fell to Great Plains Lutheran 46-29 on Friday.
This week Coach Terry Nelson’s club hosts Waubay-Summit in a doubleheader with the boys’ squad on Monday (JV girls 4 p.m., JV boys 5 p.m., varsity girls and boys to follow). “We have to start putting the ball in the hole,” said Nelson. “Scoring 29 points isn’t going to win us very many games. We just have to keep up our intensity, come out and play hard, and just keep fighting.”
Britton-Hecla 29, Redfield 28
Chellon Pruitt hit a free throw with 1:52 remaining to give the Lady Braves a 29-28 lead and neither team scored the rest of the way. B-H trailed by five after one period but Pruitt hit back-to-back baskets late to cut the margin to 16-14 at intermission. Maddi Micko drained a three to open the second half and give the Lady Braves their first lead at 17-16. Pruitt and Micko added field goals and Daynika Zuehlke had a basket and a three for a 25-21 advantage after three periods. Pruitt’s baseline jumper made it 27-23 with 7:25 to play, but that was B-H’s final field goal. Redfield regained the lead at 28-27 with 2:20 remaining before Pruitt’s game-winning free throw. Pruitt led with 12 points and eight rebounds. Karlie Zuehlke added 10 rebounds, Micko grabbed eight, and Daynika Zuehlke had four assists.
Milbank 58, Britton-Hecla 12
Britton-Hecla managed just three field goals in the loss to Milbank. The Lady Braves trailed 29-9 at halftime and went scoreless in the third quarter as Milbank put the game away. Pruitt paced B-H with five points and 10 rebounds.
Great Plains Lutheran 46, Britton-Hecla 29
Britton-Hecla was still within striking distance after three periods, trailing 36-28, but managed just one point in the final quarter. Daynika Zuehlke led the Lady Braves with eight points and four steals, while Maddi Micko and Koryn Jones scored seven points each. Karlie Zuehlke pulled down eight rebounds and added three steals, and Micko also finished with eight rebounds.
