The Britton-Hecla wrestling squad competed in a two-day, 30-team Central Cass Tournament in Casselton, ND, on Friday and Saturday and had five grapplers place among the top six in their weight class while finishing 13th as a team.
Ben Suther was fourth in the 172-pound weight class, improving his season mark to 11-3. Tucker Hardy, now 13-4, was fifth at 189 and after missing a couple of weeks with a shoulder injury Bryce Hawkinson, 7-3, returned at 145 and also placed fifth. Lincoln Kilker, 11-9, was sixth at 107, and Henry Kilker, 10-9, was fourth in 107B.
“I thought we wrestled well,” said B-H coach Josh Hawkinson. “Nobody knows who we are down here so it’s hard to get a seed, but we had some kids that had some tough draws in the first round that came back to place.
“It’s a tough tournament to place in and we went in there and placed 13th as a team, three spots better than a year ago. I was very pleased with the way the weekend went.”
The Braves are dealing with some injury issues. Bryce Hawkinson came off a shoulder injury to take fifth but tweaked the shoulder again and will be sitting out again this week. Max Suther and Corbin Dawson are also dealing with shoulder issues and Ryan Maxwell is out with a concussion.
“Every week I think we’re improving,” noted Hawkinson. “Hopefully it all comes together at the right time of year.”
