Ben Suther kept his perfect record intact with his third straight tournament championship and four other Britton-Hecla grapplers placed in the top four in the Northeast Conference Tournament held in Clark on Friday.
The tournament was rescheduled from Thursday to Friday due to blizzard conditions. Britton-Hecla now has a couple of weeks off for the holiday break before competing in a tournament in Webster on Saturday, Jan. 3.
Suther pinned his opening foe and then won a hard-fought 4-3 decision in the title match to claim the 175-pound crown and boost his season mark to 7-0. Tucker Hardy placed second and improved to 7-2 for the season at 190 pounds and Max Suther took second at 215 and stands at 6-4 on the year. Tanner Atkinson placed third at 138 and sports a 6-3 season mark, while Henry Kilker was fourth at 106 and has a 4-5 record for the year.
“I thought we did well,” said B-H coach Josh Hawkinson. “Ben is off to a good start and Max and Tucker are both wrestling on the lighter end of their weight classes and wrestling well. Now I would like to see us start using more of the things that we are working on in the room. At times it’s hard to get out of old habits, but I would like to see us trying new things so we can just keep getting better.”
Senior standout Bryce Hawkinson is still sidelined with a shoulder injury. X-rays proved to be negative but he remains out indefinitely.
