The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team opened its season in convincing fashion with a dominant 56-25 win over Tiospa Zina on Friday.
The Braves are back in action on Friday, hosting Webster Area in a twin bill with the girls’ squad (JV boys, girls 5 p.m., varsity girls, varsity boys to follow) before taking a two-week break for Christmas.
“I thought we played with a lot of poise for the opener,” said B-H coach Troy Knecht. “We were maybe a little tight right away but that’s not surprising. Our pace was good, we shared the ball, plus we used our physical advantage inside to get the game in our favor and keep it there. We did turn it over 10 times, so we’d like to see that number go down, but for the most part we had really good, patient possessions.
“Defensively we played man-to-man the entire game and we were very solid,” added Knecht. “Tiospa Zina had a hard time getting any good looks in the paint and our perimeter defenders did a nice job of limiting open three pointers. All in all it was a good start and we know what we need to work on for Friday.”
TZ managed just a pair of two-point field goals as the Braves held them to a frigid nine percent shooting on those shots, while hitting 5-17 from three-point land. The Braves shot 67% from two-point range (18-27) while hitting just 4-24 from the three-point circle to finish at 47% overall from the field.
Chaz Vietor led a balanced B-H attack with 16 points, Graham Fosness added 13, Will Richter 10, and Jaxon Zuehlke nine. Vietor also pulled down 11 rebounds, Fosness grabbed nine, and Zuehlke six. Richter was credited with five assists and Fosness had three steals.
