The Langford Area girls basketball team opened its season on the right foot with a 45-40 win over Leola-Frederick on Saturday.
The Lady Lions hosted Estelline last night Tuesday, LA travels to Ipswich on Friday, and Hitchcock-Tulare comes to town for a doubleheader with the boys’ squad on Saturday (JV boys 1 p.m., followed by JV girls, varsity boys, varsity girls).
LA led at all the quarter breaks, extending a seven-point halftime lead to eight after three quarters and held on for the win. Alex Darling led a balanced Lady Lions’ attack with 18 points. Lizzie Gustafson and Paytyn Marlow added 11 apiece.
“We needed to have a game,” said LA coach Michael Alberts. “We have done some good things at practice but needed to play someone other than ourselves. The girls came in with a lot of energy and were ready to play, and all of the girls did a lot of good things on both ends of the court.
“Defensively, we were able to pressure Leola-Frederick and caused quite a few turnovers,” Alberts added. “We also changed defenses quite a bit and our girls did a really good job of adjusting to that. We do need to work on keeping girls in front of us to stop the drive with girls getting around us too easily.
“Rebounding is also going to be a focus for us. We aren’t the tallest team this year, so we are really going to have to work on positioning and boxing out. Offensively, we did a good job of taking care of the ball and taking good shots. We have a big week this week but look forward to keep improving and getting better.”
