LA BOARD TALKS UPCOMING LEG. SESSION

LA BOARD TALKS UPCOMING LEG. SESSION

The Langford Area Board of Education met Wednesday, Nov. 12, where board members discussed legislative updates, policy revisions, and several ongoing district projects.
The meeting opened with a legislative update, with board members reviewing school funding concerns, budget expectations, and topics likely to surface during the upcoming legislative session. The district hopes to host district legislators at an upcoming meeting to continue those discussions.
The board then moved into policy work, approving language updates to its School Board Meetings policy and adopting a new policy outlining the use of artificial intelligence technology for both students and staff. New policies will be on the school website in the near future.
Members also reviewed the South Dakota Associated School Boards’ legislative positions in preparation for the session.
In other business, the board discussed pay for students who work with Live Ticket, the district’s livestreaming service for school events. This includes compensation for student workers, commentators, and others assisting with game broadcasts.
During administrative reports, Principal Abby Kwasniewski reported on academics, attendance, and office referrals, and noted that the district is still waiting on a grant tied to a student-led project creating Busy Boxes for local nursing home residents with dementia. She also shared highlights from a Northeast Area Principals meeting, presented the updated Special Education Procedure Manual, and outlined new staff trainings.
Superintendent Shad Storley also reviewed plans for the bleacher project, considering whether to proceed through a traditional bid process or utilize a purchasing cooperative. Bussing issues, including driver shortages and maintenance needs, were also highlighted.
The board entered executive session to discuss personnel matters and took no action afterward.
The next regular meeting will be held Monday, Dec. 8, at 6:15 p.m.
