Britton-Hecla Area
The Britton-Hecla volleyball squad ended its regular season on a positive note with a sweep over Wilmot last week Tuesday to clinch the Eastern Coteau Conference title and opened Region 1A tournament play last night Tuesday.
Coach Jenna Peters’ crew, which earned a fourth seed in postseason play with a 13-12 record played fifth-seeded Redfield in the quarterfinal round of the regional tourney at Aberdeen Roncalli. The winner of that contest will play a semifinal match on Thursday at number one seed Groton Area for the right to advance to the SoDak 16.
Second seed Aberdeen Roncalli met #7 Milbank and third seed Webster Area played #6 Sisseton in the other quarterfinal matches with the winners playing on Thursday for the other Region 1A SoDak 16 spot. SoDak 16 teams will be re-seeded and play on Tuesday for the eight Class A tournament slots. The state tourney will be played Nov. 20-22 in Rapid City.
Britton-Hecla rolled past Wilmot with a 25-13, 25-16, 25-21 win. The Lady Braves recorded 15 service aces, led by Jaelee Grupe with five and Maddi Micko with four. Micko and Abby Lee both pounded eight kills as B-H had 32 kills in the match. Ava Teveldal and Grupe led the defensive effort with 11 digs each.
Langford Area
The Langford Area volleyball squad, now 11-20 and the fifth seed in regional play, had a week off after wrapping up regular season play last week Tuesday before tangling with fourth seed Aberdeen Christian in quarterfinal play of the Region 1B tournament last night Tuesday.
Regional play began on Monday with a pair of play-in games in the 10-team region. Eighth seed Leola-Frederick rolled past nine seed Tiospa Zina 25-7, 25-16, 25-11 and seventh seed Waverly-South Shore swept #10 Wilmot 25-12, 25-10, 25-15. Other quarterfinal matchups last night Tuesday had #1 Northwestern against Leola-Frederick, #2 Warner played Waverly-South Shore, and #3 Hitchcock-Tulare battled #6 Waubay-Summit.
Semifinal matches will be played on Thursday to determine the two Region 1B SoDak 16 qualifiers. SoDak 16 teams will be re-seeded and play on Tuesday to decide the eight Class B tournament entries. The state tourney will be played Nov. 20-22 in Rapid City.
