LA BOARD HEARS STAFF PRESENTATIONS, ABOUT 5-YEAR PLAN

The Langford Area Board of Education met for its regular meeting Monday night, hearing staff updates and discussing several facility and program projects.
Fifth-grade teacher Lisa Carson and middle and high school math teacher Pat Sayler gave short presentations about their classrooms and curriculum. New principal Abby Kwasniewski initiated these teacher presentations to strengthen communication and fellowship between staff and board members.
The board approved a contribution for Rodney Freeman to attend the National Education Law Meeting and appointed Krissa Samson as the district’s Delegate Assembly representative.
In facility updates, the board reviewed its five-year capital outlay project list, which includes updating bathrooms, replacing gym bleachers, and adding a handicap-accessible ramp for the stage. Bids for the bleacher project are expected to be discussed by the end of the year. Kwasniewski said her students may assist by writing grants to help fund the ramp.
Superintendent Shad Storley reported that the roof project over the library and main hallway has been completed on budget. He also noted the district could use one more regular route bus driver and a reliable substitute driver.
Enrollment at Newport Colony currently stands at 26 students, down from 44 last year under new leadership.
Board member Cory Cole gave a presentation on the district’s Farm to Table program, noting that another local producer has offered to donate an animal for the school lunch program.
The board’s next meeting will be held Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7 a.m.
