The Britton-Hecla cross country team tuned up for regional competition at the Northeast Conference Meet held in Webster on Thursday.
Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad is competing in the Region 1 meet on the Webster course today (Wednesday). The top three teams and top 20 runners will advance to the state meet in Huron on Oct. 25.
“The NEC was a beautiful day to run,” noted Symens. “We are excited to compete on in the region.”
B-H had just two varsity runners participating in the NEC meet and both will represent the local squad in the regional varsity events. Joseph O’Brien placed 20th among 49 runners in the boys’ race with a 20:35.16 clocking, while Livia Knecht was 24th of 40 runners in the girls’ event in 23:50.07. Both ran a 5,000-meter course.
Danny Small was 11th in a 20-runner field with a 15:23.92 effort in the boys junior varsity race run on a 3,000-meter course. Lillian Boyko was 16th among 31 runners in the girls’ JV event in 17:52.27, and Avery Leonard was 18th in 17:57.21. Those runners are also competing in the regional JV races
Deuel took the boys team title with 29 points, followed by Milbank at 30, Sisseton 45, Webster Area 84, Aberdeen Roncalli 89, Groton Area 97, and Clark-Willow Lake 98. Teams needed to have four runners to compete as a team.
Clark-Willow Lake was the girls champion with a 29 total, followed by Roncalli with 34, Milbank 36, Deuel 71, Groton Area 71, and Redfield 95.
