B-H RUNNERS SET FOR FIRST MEET

B-H RUNNERS SET FOR FIRST MEET
Two letterwinners return for the Britton-Hecla cross country squad this fall. Livia Knecht and Joseph O’Brien will lead Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad in its season opener at Redfield on Thursday, and the Braves will host their annual invitational at the Britton Country Club on Tuesday.

The Britton-Hecla cross country team will open its fall campaign with a meet at Redfield on Thursday and will host its annual invitational at the Britton Country Club on Tuesday beginning at 4 p.m.
“We’re looking at just getting the first race under our belt,” said B-H coach Stephanie Symens.  “The first race is always filled with a little nerves because we are trying to get back in the swing of things. It’s letting our mind know that we can do this again and the training we’ve been doing is working.”
Four runners make up the B-H squad this season.  Freshmen Livia Knecht and Joseph O’Brien are returning letterwinners and will run in the varsity division, while eighth graders Lillian Boyko and Avery Leonard competing in the junior varsity competition.
All four runners were members of the squad a year ago with Knecht and O’Brien beginning their third season, and Symens thinks that getting a couple of state qualifiers is a definite possibility.
“Livia and Joseph both have their eyes set on the state meet and I think both have the ability to do so,” said Symens.  “They both ran varsity last year so they know what they need to do and how the courses are.”
With a young squad Symens just wants to see steady improvement throughout the season.
“We just want to see them improve their times and running ability,” concluded the B-H coach.  “Hopefully that will help keep them excited for cross country and excited to run throughout the year.”
