Journal Country has officially entered record territory when it comes to precipitation—both for the year so far and for the month of August, which still has days left to go.
According to National Weather Service data, Britton has received 10.43 inches of rain in August (as of Tuesday morning), surpassing the previous monthly record of 10.22 inches set in 1942. Nearby locations have reported even higher amounts. A storm that dropped 2.45 inches in Britton from Wednesday into Thursday also set a new daily record.
The summer season has also been one for the record books. From June through August, Britton has received 23.25 inches of rain, topping the previous wettest summer of 2005, when 20.57 inches fell during the same three months. And with nearly two weeks left in August, totals could climb even higher.
So far in 2025, Britton’s total precipitation stands at 28.85 inches, well above the normal of 17.27 inches for this point in the year. That already places 2025 among the wettest years on record to date—currently ranked 12th overall for total precipitation in a calendar year. Whether it moves higher will depend on what happens this fall and winter. For comparison, the driest year-to-date total ever recorded was just 6.17 in. in 1936 during the Dust Bowl.
Marshall Co. Emergency Management officials note that water may still be covering some secondary roads, and drivers are urged to use caution when traveling.
