A group of motorcyclists rolled into Britton last Monday evening, not just for the ride, but for a cause.
As part of the 2025 American Legion Ride 605 event, the South Dakota American Legion Riders made a meaningful stop at the Marshall County Veteran’s Memorial west of Britton, where local American Legion groups gathered to present donations to the South Dakota American Legion Foundation. The four-day ride, held June 7–10, raised over $8,000—far surpassing the group’s $5,000 goal—to support veterans and fund programs for children and youth across the state.
Riders had departed earlier in the day from Madison and stopped in Arlington, Lake Preston, Watertown, and Milbank before arriving in Britton. At the evening ceremony, representatives from every American Legion Post in Marshall County were present to support the Foundation’s mission. Those in attendance included Gene Larson of Langford Post 140, Hans Nelson of Veblen Post 76, Dan Schott of Britton Post 80, and Rose Kraft of the Britton American Legion Auxiliary Unit 80.
Fred Nelson, ride road captain and Department of South Dakota Riders Liaison, led the effort and coordinated the route with American Legion Posts and Rider Chapters statewide. During the event, donations were also collected at 17 host posts along the route, with additional opportunities for contributions at the upcoming Department Convention in Huron.
While in Britton, riders were treated to a campfire barbecue and fellowship at the Kraft home, marking the community’s strong support for veterans’ programs. Nelson noted that funds raised during the ride go into a permanent endowment through the South Dakota Community Foundation, with income distributed annually to support key American Legion initiatives.
Since its launch in 2021, American Legion Ride 605 has generated nearly $13,000 for the Foundation, thanks to generous support from posts, riders, and local communities like Britton.
