The 26th annual Relay for Life in Marshall County is ushering in a new era. After raising more than $1.7 million over the past two and a half decades, organizers say the traditional event is evolving to better fit the needs and lifestyles of the community.
The local chapter of the American Cancer Society has announced that this year’s Relay will not follow the traditional single-night walk format. Instead, a series of smaller events will take place throughout the year to raise awareness and funds for cancer research and support services.
According to the Marshall County Relay for Life board, interest in the usual relay has waned in recent years. “People are so busy these days, and it’s harder to gather survivors and participants for one big event,” said board members. “We’re excited to try something new that still honors our mission and brings the community together.”
2025 Relay for Life Events Scheduled
The newly reimagined Relay for Life will include multiple community events throughout the year:
-Hen’s & Chick’s Garden Party – Held in early May.
-Pork Sandwich and Pie Meal and Possible Silent Auction – Sept. 15 during the Britton-Hecla vs. Langford Area volleyball game at the Amacher Auditorium.
-Dessert and Ice Cream Social – Sept. 26 following the Britton-Hecla homecoming parade at First Lutheran Church.
-Football Tailgate and Luminaria Ceremony & Candlelight Closing – August 22 Tailgate meal at a Britton-Hecla home football game, with the luminaria and closing ceremony in the Event Center after the game.
-Archie’s Turtles Pie Auction – Nov. 22 at Todd’s Tavern
Other events may be added to this list. Keep your eye on the newspaper for more announcements.
Survivors will be recognized at each event, and the public is encouraged to participate by attending, donating, and supporting the cause in any way they can.
In addition, look for the group’s iconic pink tractor, donated by the family of long-time co-president Cleo Symens, in area parades this year.
The Marshall County Relay for Life Board is currently seeking local sponsorships, donations, and silent auction items.
