The Britton-Hecla/Langford Area High School Trapshooting Team brought home a third place finish and had an individual champion at the South Dakota State High School Clay Target League State Tournament held last weekend at the Aberdeen Gun Club.
The state tournament brings together over 850 student athletes from more than 50 high school teams from across the state. Each shooter competes in two sessions of 50 targets, totaling 100 targets for the day. Those scores contribute to both individual and team standings with classifications based on the athlete’s season-ending averages in novice, junior varsity, and varsity.
Dylan Harmon led the local shooters with a perfect performance that resulted in an individual state title. Harmon broke 100 straight targets to claim the crown. On top of that, he broke 25 straight in his practice round to shoot a flawless 125 of 125. Raymond Schuster also earned a patch for 50 straight, and Camden Dinger broke 25 straight.
The local squad, which included eight shooters from Britton-Hecla and eight from Langford Area in the spring league, placed second as a team in league action. Harmon was second among male shooters during league shooting with a 23.2 average, while Kiera Bennett was second in the girls category with a 21.2 average.
Four local shooters earned All-State recognition. They included Harmon with his 23.2 average, Schuster at 22.6, Dinger at 22.3, and Hunter Jensen at 22.0.
