There’s a new “Mother Goose” in town, but she’s not new to Langford. Shelby Price Everson is a 2016 graduate of Langford Area High School, and can remember attending the Langford Library ‘Mother Goose Story Time’ from a young age. Yvonne Olson held the title as ‘Mother Goose’ for many years until her sudden passing in 2020. “Yvonne had built a vibrant and thriving little Library, and we want to keep that alive, especially with the ‘Mother Goose Stories’ program,” stated long time Library Board member Brandi Fries.
Shelby and her husband moved back to the area after living and working in Mississippi. “My husband was a private jet mechanic, and after starting our family we knew we wanted to be closer to our family back home,” states Everson. After moving back to South Dakota and settling into her late great grandpa’s farm house, the couple welcomed two children.
Shelby decided she would stay home with the children while her husband took on his own welding business. Now that her oldest is starting kindergarten next fall, she’s finding some down time and decided to apply for the new librarian position. “I was looking for something flexible,” states Shelby, “So when this came up, I knew it would be a good fit.”
Shelby already has the month of May full of activities such as Mother Goose story time every Wednesday from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., the summer reading program which starts June 9 and will be held every Monday until July 28, Lego Club will be Tuesdays from 3:30-4:30, and even a Senior Bingo that will run once a month.
She also has goals in mind for the library’s future. “I’d really like to get some fun activities going, especially an afterschool program. Our town is in desperate need of a place for kids to go after school and before sporting activities or practices. I also would like to start some fun trivia nights or date nights for couples,” says Shelby.
