Britton-Hecla track athletes have qualified for eight events at the state track meet set for Sioux Falls Thursday through Saturday.
The top 24 individuals or teams in each event during the regular season earned state berths.
Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad competed in its final regular season meet in Warner on Friday. A scheduled meet in Webster on Thursday as cancelled due to wet conditions at the track complex.
“Warner was a great last chance meet,” said Symens. “We had great weather and the kids worked hard and got a couple more events to the state track meet. I wish we could have had a couple more meets this year, but weather in South Dakota doesn’t always cooperate with this sport. We are excited to see what happens in Sioux Falls this weekend.”
Daniel Person heads the list of B-H qualifiers, ranking eighth in the 1600-meter run, and he is also a part of the qualifying 3200 and 1600 relay quartets which stand at 14th and 20th respectively. Other members of the 3200 unit are Jaxon Zuehlke, Jack Teveldal, and Drew Heitmann. Bryce Hawkinson, Zuehlke, and Ben Suther are part of the 1600 squad.
Two other B-H boys qualified in individual events. Chaz Vietor finished in a six-way tie for 18th in the high jump, and Zuehlke ranks 23rd in the javelin.
On the girls side Ava Teveldal, Jeris Stark, Livie Knecht, and Daynika Zuehlke qualified in the 3200 relay in the 22nd spot. Individual qualifiers are Jaelee Grupe, who is in a four-way tie for the 17th spot in high jump, and Marley Sundin in a three-way tie for the 23rd slot in the 100-meter dash. Abby Lee was ranked 11th in the triple jump but is unable to compete due to a bone bruise in her leg.
Britton-Hecla had four event winners in the Warner meet. Person was the 1600-meter run winner and teamed up with Bryce Hawkinson, Jaxon Zuehlke, and Ben Suther to win the 1600 relay. Zuehlke also claimed the javelin title, and Jaelee Grupe won the high jump.
