Both the Britton-Hecla boys and girls track squads earned runner-up finishes in the Eastern Coteau Conference meet held in Britton last week Tuesday.
The local thinclads had two other meets scheduled this week but neither was held due to weather. The Northeast Conference meet set for Redfield was cancelled, and a meet at Warner was moved from Monday to this Friday. Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad will also compete in Webster on Thursday.
This week’s meets will wrap up the regular season schedule with the top 24 athletes/teams in each event earning spots in the state meet in Sioux Falls May 29-31.
“The ECC meet went well,” said Symens. “We had kids step up and run good times and had lots of personal records. There are several relays and athletes that are close to the top 24, so we have two more meets to get to our goals.”
Currently ranked among the top 24 from Britton-Hecla are Abby Lee, triple jump, 33-10 (10th); Jaelee Grupe, high jump, 5-11 (5-way tie for 15th); Marley Sundin, 100 dash, 13.07 (4-way tie for 20th); Chaz Vietor, high jump, 5-11 (5-way tie for 18th); boys 3200 relay, 8:48.19 (18th); and the boys medley relay, 3:52.30 (22nd).
A couple of events are on the bubble. Daniel Person ranks 26th in the 1600 run and the boys 1600 relay is 26th, just a second out of the 24th spot.
