With just eight days remaining in the regular season the Britton-Hecla track squad is focusing on qualifying as many as possible for the state meet in Sioux Falls May 29-31.
The top 24 individuals or teams in each event at the end of the regular season will earn state berths. Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad competed at Milbank last week Tuesday, Sisseton on Friday, and hosted the Eastern Coteau Conference meet yesterday (Tuesday). Remaining dates are the Northeast Conference meet in Redfield on Thursday and at Webster next week Thursday, May 22.
“It’s nice to be able to run in warmer weather,” said Symens. “Athletes are working hard to try and get in the top 24 for state. We have several people that are in there now and several that are very close. We need to work hard in these last two weeks.
Currently two girls are among the top 24. Abby Lee is ranked ninth in triple jump with a 33-10 effort, and Jaelee Grupe is in a four-way tie for 15th in high jump at 4-11. On the boys’ side Chaz Vietor is in a four-way tie for 16th at 5-11 in high jump. The boys’ 3200 relay stands in the 18th spot, the 1600 relay is less than a second out of the 24th spot, currently ranking 25th, and Dashel Davidson is tied for 26th in the 100 dash, just .05 of a second out of the 24th position..
Three boys relay teams brought home first place finishes at Sisseton. The foursome of Dashel Davidson, Bryce Hawkinson, Daniel Person, and Ben Suther won the 400 event. Jaxon Zuehlke, Jack Teveldal, Drew Heitmann, and Suther took the 1600 title, and Mitchell Burger, Suther, Hawkinson, and Person topped the medley relay field. At Milbank Vietor won the high jump with a career-best jump of 5-11.
