The Sisseton-Britton-Webster high school baseball squad dropped a 16-5 five-inning decision to Groton Area on Sunday to wrap up regular season play and now has its eye set on making some noise in regional tournament play.
“It appears as though we’ve made the region tournament,” said SBW coach Mark Nelson, whose club compiled a 2-7 regular season mark in its first year of competition. “There are 10 teams in our region and eight make the tournament. As it stands right now, we will play at Madison-Chester, the number one seed, next Tuesday or Wednesday. But that could change by the end of the week depending on how teams do.”
SBW played Madison-Chester during the regular season and dropped an 8-1 decision when the hosts pushed across five third inning runs in the seven-inning contest.
Groton Area used a couple of big innings to post its Sunday win. The hosts started fast with four first inning tallies and put the game away with an 11-run outburst in the fourth, thanks in part to a grand slam home run by Karsten Fliehs.
“We ended up giving up a big beginning and gave the other team too many opportunities to beat us,” noted Nelson. “Field conditions were tough on Sunday with the wind and things just didn’t ever seem to go our way. We’re looking forward to moving on to the next game.”
Groton Area out-hit SBW 13-3. Ben Suther, Max Dahlen, and Levi Nelson each laced singles and knocked in a run apiece. Suther started on the mound and went three innings, fanning four. Carter Stickland relieved in the fourth.
