The Britton-Hecla boys and girls track squads came up with strong performances in the annual Orville Pfitzer Relays held in Britton last week Tuesday.
Coach Stephanie Symens’ squad was supposed to compete in the Redfield Relays on Thursday but that meet was cancelled due to weather. A scheduled junior high meet in Britton on Monday was also washed out.
This week the local thinclads will compete in Sisseton on Friday starting at 11 a.m. and travel to Sioux Falls for the Howard Wood Relays on Friday and Saturday. Tuesday B-H will travel to Milbank.
B-H tracksters won four event titles. Daniel Person took the 1600 run and teamed up with Bryce Hawkinson, Drew Heitmann, and Ben Suther to claim the 1600 relay title. Daynika Zuehlke won the javelin held at Webster the day before the Britton meet, and Jaelee Grupe won the high jump.
Six B-H events are still among the top 24 in the state among Class A competitors. At the end of the regular season the top 24 in each event qualify for the state meet.
Currently, Person ranks 22nd in the 1600 run, the 1600 boy relay is 20th, the 3200 relay of Suther, Heitmann, Jack Teveldal, and Person is 13th, and Dashel Davidson is in a six-way tie for 13th in the 100 dash. Marley Sundin is 22nd in the 100 dash, and Grupe is in a nine-way tie for 12th in high jump.
