Mother Nature was not real cooperative but the Britton-Hecla track squad was able to get in its first outdoor meet of the season at Milbank on Thursday.
The local tracksters had three event winners in the meet. Daniel Person won the 1600-meter run and teamed up with Jack Teveldal, Jaxon Zuehlke, and Drew Heitmann to win the 3200 relay. Dashel Davidson, Bryce Hawkinson, Heitmann, and Ben Suther won the 400 relay.
“It is always good to get your first meet out of the way,” said B-H coach Stephanie Symens. “It was a little chilly in Milbank, but we had athletes compete well and position themselves in the top 24. It was a great way to start off the season.”
The top 24 performers in each event during the regular season advance to the state meet, and B-H is among the top 24 in six events after the opening meet. Davidson is in a six-way tie for 11th in the 100 dash with an 11.40 clocking, and the 3200 relay quartet is 15th. Abby Lee and Jaelee Grupe are in a seven-way tie for 21st in high jump at 4-8 and Lee is ranked 24th in long jump with a 15-3.5 effort. Marley Sundin is 17th in the 100 dash with a time of 13.26.
Britton-Hecla was back in action yesterday (Tuesday), hosting the Orville Pfitzer Relays. Thursday the local thinclads travel to the Redfield Relays for a 10 a.m. start, and Tuesday will participate in the Rob Luecke Invite in Groton starting at 11 a.m. The B-H junior high squad is at Groton on Friday at 2 p.m. and hosts a meet on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
