STUDENTS LEARN ON THE PRAIRIE

STUDENTS LEARN ON THE PRAIRIE
Britton-Hecla and Langford Area students enjoyed a day of outdoor learning at Fort Sisseton last week. Eco Ed Day included sessions like a prairie and range session taught by Blaze Jones, pictured, Marshall County Soil Conservationalist. Left to right are B-H students Jackson Medhaug, Brady Heitkamp, and Kylan Sasker.

Eco Ed Day was held last Wednesday on a beautiful autumn day at Fort Sisseton. 55 seventh grade students from both Britton-Hecla and Langford Area participated in an outside classroom, learning about  Natural Resources. The sessions (and instructors) included Prairie & Range (Blaze Jones-NRCS Soil Conservationist, Marshall Co.), Soils (Matt Hubers, Ducks Unlimited), Forestry (Josh Wagner, Day County Conservation District Manager), Water Quality (Cory Zirbel, Glacial Lakes Project Co- Coordinator), and Wetlands (Laura Hubers, retired USFWS).
Following lunch, which was provided by the Marshall County Conservation District, the students watched the Rainfall Simulator demonstrated by Shane Jordan and Eric Barsness of the Brookings Area NRCS Field office. These demonstrations effectively showed the students the high importance of keeping  soil covered to be a good steward of the land, not only their generation but their children’s generation.
The day concluded with a Falconry and Raptor Education session presented by Tanya McCarlson, Falconer/Owner/Handler, of Roslyn.  Tanya educated the students using several of her falconry birds. She shared how the conservation of birds of prey is a vital part of our natural environment.

Some people view it as no different than other entertainers and performers who have appeared at White House events under various presidents. Others believe a professional fighting event was not an appropriate use of the White House grounds. What do you think?
