BRITTON CITY COUNCIL: Council Reorganizes, Still Short One Member

At their Monday meeting, the Britton City Council took various steps to reorganize as they do each year. Councilmembers Norm Mack and Lindsey Kimber took the oath of office for their next term. The Ward 3 seat is vacant after Austin Sasker’s term expired. In other organizational business, Brian Beck was reappointed as president of the council and Shane Storley was chosen to retain his position as vice president. Annual committee appointments will be kept as is and mileage was set at the state rate of .655 cents per mile.

When the council convened as the zoning board, Amber Schempp was granted a variance for her property near Highway 10 and  14th Avenue. The variance allows a seven foot setback from the north and west property lines to allow for an office to eventually be placed on the north end of the lot. The second reading of Ordinance #609 rezoning a portion of the mobile home district was also passed and adopted. Dirk Weber was granted a special exception to eventually build a storage unit on the south side of the ballfield. A variance for the project was also approved.

Engineer Michael Redenbaugh from ISG provided the Council with an update on the Sanitary Sewer Reconstruction project. He stated that all sewer services have been restored and the installation process will be completed in the next week. Open roads are being allowed to settle due to wet conditions but will be paved this year.

A pay application for approximately $379,000 for work done on the project through the end of June was approved. Finance officer Jennifer Athey also noted that additional funding of $733,000 for the project had also been approved in the form of a SRF loan.

A possible policy to notify residents of trees being cut down on city right of ways in front of their homes was discussed. With Mayor Clyde Fredrickson out of town, Public Works Supervisor George Flanery noted that they had not had time to discuss the matter yet. The idea of opting into receiving notifications on the city’s website was briefly discussed. No action was taken on the matter.

In the finance officer’s report, she noted that the city had reverted to their old software to pay utility bills after the new software proved to have poor functionality. Athey also reminded that Venture Comm rates will be increasing.

There will be a special meeting on July 22 at 5:30 for a special liquor license and possibly business related to the sanitary sewer project. The next regular meeting will be August 12.

Some people view it as no different than other entertainers and performers who have appeared at White House events under various presidents. Others believe a professional fighting event was not an appropriate use of the White House grounds. What do you think?
