BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

The building had been a pool hall, a barber shop, a liquor store and a bar/restaurant. Located at  314 Broadway Ave, right on Main Street in Eden, South Dakota, this space had truly stood the test of time. But by the 2010’s, it had sat empty for about a decade. That’s when local resident Sam Pitzl got to thinking. His vision and desire to help reinvigorate the building and Main Street in Eden eventually became the quaint ice cream shop, Sam’s Five and Dime.
Pitzl, the brains and brawn behind the business, was concerned about not only an empty building on Main Street in Eden, but the corporatization of small towns in general. When he purchased the building, he noted, “I just wanted to go back to a simpler time.” Accordingly, he wanted to establish a business that would somehow accomplish that.
First, he had to completely gut the building. Pitzl essentially redid the building from top to bottom, from the ceilings to the floors. When completed, one side of the establishment became Country Cuts & More, a salon run by Becky Allen. There is also a Western Insurance Agency office plus additional office space.
On the other side of the building was the space for Pitzl to enact his dream- a throwback business that would harken back to simpler days. At first, he envisioned an old-fashioned soda fountain. However, he did not have much luck when he approached soft drink companies about the idea. He moved on to something similar- an ice cream shop!

Poll: TRUMP FIGHTS FOR HIS BIRTHDAY President Donald Trump recently hosted a UFC mixed martial arts event on the White House South Lawn as part of a celebration tied to his 80th birthday and the nation's upcoming 250th anniversary. Some people view it as no different than other entertainers and performers who have appeared at White House events under various presidents. Others believe a professional fighting event was not an appropriate use of the White House grounds. What do you think?
