The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team earned its second win of the season, stopping Tri-State 44-40 on Saturday, while dropping decisions to Aberdeen Roncalli 59-44 and Leola-Frederick 58-20.

The Britton-Hecla boys basketball team earned its second win of the season, stopping Tri-State 44-40 on Saturday, while dropping decisions to Aberdeen Roncalli 59-44 and Leola-Frederick 58-20.

Coach Troy Knecht’s squad stood at 2-12 heading into a home contest with Sisseton last night Tuesday. Friday B-H will host Langford Area in a doubleheader with the girls’ team (JV boys, girls 5 p.m., varsity girls, varsity boys to follow).

The Braves rode a strong third quarter, outscoring the Titans 19-6, to their second win of the season.

“We did some things better in this one,” Knecht noted. “We were especially strong on the boards and that ultimately covered up some things and allowed us to get the win. The turnovers were still way too high. If you throw it away you don’t even get a look at the basket, and this has to improve. We also didn’t shoot particularly well from the field (35%) and we were 4/18 from the charity stripe. Our defense was very good and the effort on the boards I feel was the difference in the game.

“I see improvements, especially with our younger players,” concluded Knecht. “We have to keep learning from the things we don’t do well so we can improve on them.”

Daniel Person hit five first quarter points to lead his club to a 14-9 lead at the break. Then Jordyn McGregor hit a pair of driving buckets and Mitchell Burger scored on an inbounds pass to put the Braves up 20-12 with 3:50 left in the first half. But Tri-State closed with a 7-0
