MARY ELLEN HEITMANN

The Memorial Mass for Mary Ellen Heitmann will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 9, 2023 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Eden. Fr. Ken Lulf will celebrate the mass. Inurnment will be in the St. Michael Cemetery of Eden under the direction of the Olson Funeral Chapel.

Mary Ellen Pitzl was born January 23, 1943 to George and Elvera (Opitz) Pitzl in Webster, SD. She attended elementary school in Eden and graduated from St. Francis Academy in Hankinson, ND. After high school she attended Presentation College in Aberdeen, SD for two years before transferring and graduating from Creighton University in Omaha, NE. Following graduation she worked for the Social Security Administration in Kansas City, MO.

On June 28, 1970 she married DuWayne Heitmann at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eden. Mary was always there for everyone and her home was always open to family and friends for wonderful meals and lodging. Throughout her entire life she remained a staunch supporter of all who needed help. After living in Eden for over 40 years, she and DuWayne moved to Aberdeen and she continued her active volunteer lifestyle by working at the Roncalli Nearly New Store. DuWayne passed in June 2006 and Mary Ellen continued to make her home in Aberdeen. She worked at Plains Commerce Bank for a few years.

Mary Ellen was a gifted needleworker and had a talent for painting. She loved having a beautiful garden and enjoyed canning over the years. Her heart was to serve others, and she will be dearly missed by her family and friends.

She passed away Friday, November 17, 2023 at Marshall County Healthcare Center at the age of 80.

Surviving her are her sisters: Georgia (Walt) Barr of Eden and Maureen (Howard) Beam of Grand Junction, CO; her brothers: George (Joy) Pitzl of Lake City, SD and James (Jan) Pitzl of Eden; and a sister- in-law, Elaine Kirchner of Bloomington, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwayne; her parents, George and Elvera Pitzl; and two sisters: Marjorie Swanson and Jeanne Moch.
