BUSINESS OF THE MONTH: Back Forty Beef and Adventure Farm

A’MAZE’ING FALL FAMILY FUN NEAR PIERPONT

Fall is in the air! The leaves are changing colors, farmers are taking to the field, and pumpkins are appearing on doorsteps. And what is sure to become a new fall tradition is taking root near Pierpont, South Dakota. Back Forty Beef and Adventure Farm is a new destination that families are sure to enjoy, especially their unique 12-acre corn maze.

Back Forty Beef and Adventure Farm is a family operated affair owned by Kelly and Clint Brandlee. Clint is a native to the area and graduated from Bristol High School. He and Kelly, who hails from Salem, farm on land that has been in Clint’s family for five generations. This makes the couple’s daughters, Kylie (age two) and Jaycee (age four), sixth generation Brandlee farmers.

The family was running a somewhat typical farming operation with cattle and small grains until the COVID pandemic in 2020 got them thinking.  At the time, they recognized nationwide trends of meat shortages and extreme price fluctuations.  The Brandlees got to thinking that they could buck those trends by selling their own product directly.

According to Kelly, “We had been thinking about this for a while. We wanted to bring customers fresh home-grown beef at a fair price with a delicious flavor you won’t find in the supermarket. COVID just gave us the push we needed.” Thus, Back Forty Beef, LLC was born and in business by May 2021.
