Virginia June Miller was born June 21, 1922 to Glenn and Anna (Jesme) Miller in rural Day County, SD. She grew up on the farm near Claremont and attended country grade school. She graduated from Groton High School. She then went on to study at Augustana College in Sioux Falls for two years. She left school to work at the Army Air Corps Base in Sioux Falls. It was there where she met and fell in love with Gerald “Mike” Micko. They were married December 14, 1944 in Springfield, IL.

After Mike was discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1946, they moved to a farm outside of Claremont where they built a life with their four sons Gregory, Dennis, Bradley and Martin. Sadly, Mike passed away in 1978. A few years later, Virginia left the farm and moved to Groton. She kept busy working at the Brown County Treasurer’s Office in Aberdeen as a clerk until retiring.

Virginia enjoyed many things. She was an avid bowler and she and her team made it to Nationals on at least one occasion. For most of her bowling years, her team consisted of the same group of ladies. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge. She always enjoyed an entertaining game of Farkle with family. Virginia was a creative and talented lady that did many crafts, including cross stich, some of which were entered in the Brown County Fair. She loved spending time with her family and friends and was delighted when she could spend time with her grandkids. She was always up for a road trip and took pleasure in traveling. When given the opportunity, she enjoyed fishing as well as spending time at the lake. Virginia enjoyed visiting with many people, pretty much a friend to all. She always had a twinkle in her eye and a contagious laugh. Virginia “Grandma Gin” was a very special and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a member of United Methodist Church in Claremont.

Virginia passed away Sunday, January 28, 2024 at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton at the age 101.

She is survived by her sons, Gregory (Patricia), Dennis (LaDonna) and Martin (Julene); a daughter-in-law, Loisanne “Lolly”; thirteen grandchildren: Kevin, Amy (Jamie), Lisa, Dustin, Lindsie, Mackensie (Jamie), Jordan (Tara), Kelly, Kristin (Jason), Aleesha (Dan), Aaron (Sandi), Ashley (Shane) and Gerald (Megan); and sixteen great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her son, Bradley; a grandson, BJ; her brothers: Ralph, Donald “Bing”, Robert “Jack” and an infant brother.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be directed to the Claremont Church.

Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Martin Micko – 11680 408th Ave – Claremont, SD 57432.
