Jean Ann Kiehn was born on February 26, 1929, in Minot, ND to Frederick and Anna (Harrison) Kiehn. Growing up she attended grade school in Minot until the 6th grade and then moved to Mayville, ND. When she was a sophomore the family moved to Britton and she graduated from Britton High School in 1947. While in school she helped at the family creamery in Britton.
Jean met her husband (Virgil) in Britton, SD and on October 31, 1948, they were united in marriage at the First Lutheran Church in Britton and remained in Britton their entire married life. In 1950, they welcomed a son Gordon Virgil, 1953 a son Ronald Nyle and in 1959 they got their daughter, Sandra Jean followed by another son Steven Lee in 1961.
Once the children were in school, Jean took a job on Tuesdays at the Britton Sale Barn as the clerk and later worked at Wilger’s V Store and later Thoelke’s Department store. After that she took a job as receptionist for Dr. Dorsett in Britton. After her retirement she and Virgil took on the babysitting role for their grandkids and doing what they could to help when needed.
Jean was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church singing in the choir in her earlier years and belonged to circle. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Lutheran Brotherhood board, Britton Country Club, 49’ers Card Club and Fun After Fifty. On any given weekday her car would be at the Fun After Fifty Center with the cards dealt, coffee on and prepared to spend the entire afternoon there. She thoroughly enjoyed playing cards especially whist and pinochle but also spent countless hours playing Triple Yahtzee where she outplayed Virgil and Sandra!
Virgil and Jean had many vacations visiting her sister’s home in CA every other year with the whole family in the Chevrolet! They also enjoyed bus trips to the east coast, Florida and Branson, along with many cruises with family and friends. They were lucky enough to visit the Arctic Circle, Alaska and Hawaii. She always said she was so glad that they took the time to travel when they were both healthy.
Above all else she loved her husband, children and grandchildren. She never missed any of her children’s activities and was their #1 fan for each of them. She also tried to make as many trips as she could to see grandchildren and their activities.
Jean moved to Spruce Court assisted living and a few years later to Wheatcrest Hills in June 2018, where she passed peacefully on September 14, 2023.
Grateful for having shared her life are her four children: Gordon (Debby) Meeker and Ronald (Julie) Meeker both of Sioux Falls, SD; Sandra (Jim) Peters of Britton, SD; Steven (April) Meeker of Spearfish, SD; eight grandchildren: Erika (Jeff) Povondra, Kelly (Katie) Meeker, Jameson (Carly) Peters, Jamie Meeker, Brooke (Todd) Serfoss, Kacey (Tyler) Aldren, Logan Meeker, and Miranda (Jonny) Higham; 12 greatgrandchildren; one brother-inlaw, Nyle Meeker of Maysville, NC; and one niece and seven nephews.
