Orlyn was at home at the time of his passing on September 15, 2019, with Alice by his side holding his hand while he reached out for Jesus. His family spent his last days with him reminiscing about their lives together. Throughout his life Orlyn’s constant and abiding love was always for his Lord and his family.
Orlyn Harlow Martin Johnson was born on October 16, 1927, to Olaf and Hattie (Waage) Johnson at home on a farm in rural Langford. He began his farming career alongside his father. He married Alice Angle at Highlanda Lutheran Church on January 27, 1952. They farmed together for nearly 50 years. During that time they were very proud to adopt three children; Carolee, Brian, and Jan.
Orlyn was a very active participant in his community. Along with several Langford business men, he helped start the Langford Development Corporation. He served in the Henry Osness Post #141 of the American Legion for 68 years and in the U.S Army Fifth Area during the Korean War. For two terms he was a board member for the Langford school board. His faith was the cornerstone of his life and he was a committed and active member in his church. He could always be found working at Kumla feeds, pancake breakfasts, Lutefisk suppers, or any church event that needed workers. He was sexton of the Falnes Cemetery for many years. Using memorial funds from the Falnes Cemetery Association, Orlyn and another Falnes member

Orlyn’s favorite hobby was reading. Through the years he could always be found with a book in his hand whether at home, on vacation or anytime/ anywhere he had a free moment. He was blessed with continued good vision and in recent years spent his time reading his Kindle. Once he commented that he had been all over the world and was able to learn a vast amount of history all within the world of books. Reading was his passion. Other things that Orlyn enjoyed were traveling, listening to Paul Harvey and polka music! He was a faithful watcher of RFD TV, especially shows with restored tractors of his era, and he never missed an episode of Jeopardy.
Orlyn is survived by his wife of 67 years, Alice; his children, Carolee (Rob) Stuberg, Missoula MT, Brian (Donna) Johnson, Panama City Beach, FL, and Jan (Bill) Berger, Brookings; his grandchildren, Christopher (Whitney) Stuberg, Josh Stuberg, Heather (Mark) Boyett, Steven Johnson, Justin Berger, Alex (Stephanie) Berger, and Austin Berger; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Alice Larson and brother-in-law Clifford Larson, Jeanette Thompkins and brother-in-law Leslie Thompkins, and Mary Ann Johnson and brother-inlaw Robert Johnson.
Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Alice Johnson, 2410 Sunrise Ridge Circle Apt. #112, Brookings, SD 57006.
