ORIETTE MONSON

The funeral service for Oriette Monson was held on Friday, March 1, at Evangelical Lutheran Church in Langford. Rev. Dr. Ramona Hayes officiated and spring interment will be in the Hillside Cemetery of Langford.

Oriette Monson passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2019, at Violet Tschetter Memorial Home of Huron, SD, at the age of 97.

Oriette Violet West was born on May 11, 1921, on a farm near Langford to Lars Olson West and Melinda (Nelson) West. She was baptized and confirmed at the Langford Evangelical Church. She attended school at Newport 4 County school near Langford and graduated from eighth grade.

On February 19, 1948, she was united in marriage with Thomas Melvin Monson in Webster. To this union three children were born: Gary, Ron, and Jean. Oriette worked alongside her husband in their café business from 1948 to 1951. When they left the café business Oriette became a stay at home mom. She worked part time as a school custodian until she became a babysitter for area families. Oriette was known for her cake decorating skills which she shared with her community, as well as her family. Thomas passed away June 6, 1992, and Oriette continued to make her home in Langford.

In 2010 Oriette had a stroke and became a resident of Violet Tschetter Memorial Home in Huron. Due to her strong Norwegian line she made a full recovery and was able to enjoy life for another nine years. She was always ready for a road trip or new experience. She was very fortunate to have been able to enjoy her family and the events that came up. She was a lifelong member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her two sons, Gary (Jane) Monson of Benkelman, NE, and Ron (Coleen) Monson of Langford; a daughter, Jean (Robert) Fluke of Huron, SD; her grandchildren, Jennifer (Chad) DeWester of Wauneta, NE, Lars Monson of Rapid City, Justin Monson of Langford, Trista Monson of Langford, Brent (Kim) Fluke of Yankton, Kelsey (Dustin) Hunt of Aberdeen, and seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Preceding her in death are her parents; her husband; a sister, Evelyn; a brother, Lewis; brother-in-law, Marvin; and sister-in-law, Delores.
