The funeral service for MarGarett E. Knecht will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 11, at First Lutheran Church in Britton. Pastor Terrill Sorensen will officiate. Interment will be in the Britton Cemetery followed by a light lunch served at the church fellowship hall.

MarGarett passed away Friday, April 19, 2019, at her home in Monmouth, OR, with her family at her side, at the age of 98.

MarGarett Emma (Johnson) Knecht was born on February 12, 1921, to Elmer and Anna Charolett (Sundberg) Johnson in Langford, SD. She grew up and attended school in Langford.

After her graduation in 1940, she married Henry Wayne Knecht on September 20, 1940, in Aberdeen. They made their home in Houghton, and farmed until 1947 when they moved to Britton, where Wayne worked for Thorpe Auto.

They raised two children, a. son Mark and a daughter Mary Jo. In 1995, MarGarett and Wayne moved to Aberdeen. After Wayne’s passing in 1998 MarGarett decided to move to Oregon to be close to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. She lived in Corvallis, OR, from 2000 until 2010 and then moved to an assisted living facility in Monmouth, OR, to be even closer to her family.

MarGarett was a homemaker, loved to grow flowers, was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Britton, enjoyed baking, cooking, crocheting, knitting, coffee with her friends, ladies Bible studies, did volunteer work where needed, and served on several committees such as ladies auxiliary and church library, among many others.

MarGarett enjoyed playing Bingo, Mexican train, Rummyo, Dominos, card games, and just spending time talking with people. Her favorite pastime was crocheting outfits for baby dolls and blankets, which she donated to charities at Christmas time. She got the nickname, “Doll Lady” and they looked for her every November so that little girls would get a baby for Christmas. She also loved to grow tomatoes, which her daughter Mary Jo would plant for her and she would then share with her neighbors. The A & W wasn’t too far to go for a root beer float either, or an ice cream cone after a hair appointment.

She attended church with her daughter and family, monthly senior potlucks at the church, music in the park in the summer, and 4th of July parades and BBQs. She also spent time at the coast with her daughter where she ate seafood and loved to sit in the room and watch the waves.

The holidays were especially happy for her when all the family got together at her daughter’s home, usually around 12 to 15 for dinner. She even made room for friends that needed a place to go for the holiday. There was always something she was involved with.

MarGarett is survived by son, Mark Knecht of Salem, OR; daughter, Mary Jo (Frank) Behnke of Independence, OR; three grandchildren, Chad Behnke of Independence, OR; Merritta VanRavenswaay of Corvallis, OR; Kristen Behnke of Sutherlin, OR; five greatgrandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and four sisters, Hattie Pierson, Hazel Wineland, Frances Essex and Florence Swanson.

Condolences may be directed to the family at: Mary Jo Behnke, 8175 Stapleton Rd., Independence, OR 97351.

Her arrangements have been entrusted to the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.
