The funeral for Leonard LaBatte was held on Tuesday, October 9, at the First Presbyterian Church of Britton with Rev. Deb Mack officiating. Burial was beside his infant daughter in the Britton Cemetery.
Leonard passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018, at Wheatcrest Hills in Britton at the age of 58, surrounded by his family.
Leonard Gene LaBatte was born on February 7, 1960, at Sisseton to LaVonne Joyce LaBatte. Leonard’s mother passed away in 1970. Leonard and his siblings were sent to live at the Tekakwitha Orphanage near Sisseton. A short time later, Leonard and his twin brother, Kenneth, moved to the Britton area to live with foster parents, Chan and Carol Benda. He attended school in Britton and finished high school in 1978.
In 1979, Leonard was united in marriage with Lori Meyer in Britton. They became parents of three children, and were later divorced.
Leonard worked for Jarrett Farms, Richard Symens Farms, and Penrhos Farms until back surgeries forced an early retirement from farm work. He always enjoyed his work on the farm and especially liked the cattle and sheep.
As a proud member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, Leonard enjoyed attending pow wows, and other events that were part of his heritage. He enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Vikings and Twins, as well as the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. In his younger years, he greatly enjoyed playing golf and fishing. He had a special place in his heart for the Benda farm, and was perhaps his happiest when attending any of his grandchildren’s activities.
Leonard entered Marshall County Healthcare Center on Saturday, September 23, and was transferred to Wheatcrest Hills on September 28 where he passed away under Hospice Care.
Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Angel (Gerald) McGregor, Britton; his son, Jeremy LaBatte; four grandchildren, Peris Fellows, Jordyn McGregor, Ivory LaBatte, Pressley LaBatte; his parents, Chan and Carol Benda of Britton; his sisters, Yolanda (Steve) Koball of Rochester, MN, Kathy Bosse of Britton, and Robyn (Warren) Lahammer of Rapid City; his brothers, Alan (Pam) Benda of Sisseton and Todd Brown of Sisseton; a sister-in-law Althea LaBatte of Newton Grove, NC; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Preceding him in death were his mother; his infant daughter, Amber; his twin brother Kenneth on August 4, 1980; his brother, Darwin LaBatte; his grandparents, Pearl and Archie LaBatte; and a brotherin-law, Keith Bosse.
Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Angel McGregor, P. O. Box 264, Britton, SD 57430.
