Emil Rheinhold Frederick was born on July 17, 1938, at Ellendale, ND, to Louis and Julia Helga (Stelzer) Fredrick. As a youngster, he moved with his family to Kulm, ND, where he grew up and attended school. In 1957 he graduated from Kulm High School. The next few years, Emil worked for area farmers.
Emil answered his country’s call to service and joined the U. S. Army on January 23, 1959. He was honorably discharged on March 5, 1962. During his time, he received citations as a rifle sharpshooter and achieved expert status with a carbine. Following his discharge, Emil returned to the Kulm area and again worked for area farmers.
On January 7, 1972, Emil was united in marriage with Kathleen Ann “Kathi” Hemmerling. They made their home in Ellendale where Emil started working at the Farmers Union Elevator. In the mid 1980’s, they moved to Britton and Emil became the manager of the Kidder Elevator in Kidder, SD. He retired from there in 2008, and began working part time at Cliff’s One Stop. He was still working there at the time of his death.
Emil was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Britton. He also belonged to the American Legion Post #137 of Ellendale, ND. In his spare time, Emil greatly enjoyed driving around the country and watching how the crops were progressing. He was always ready to try his hand at a game of chance. Perhaps more than anything, Emil loved to play pinochle, and with his daughter had participated in many tournaments over the years.
Grateful for having shared his life is his wife of 46 years, Kathi Frederick of Britton; a daughter, Sheila (Brett) Anderson of Forman, ND; a son, Darren Frederick of Britton; two grandchildren, Kristen (Cory) Driscoll of Grand Forks, ND, and Emily Anderson of Forman; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Elsie Titus of Oakes, ND, and Hilda Mogck of Fairdale, WA; and a number of nieces, nephews. and their families.
Preceding him in death were his parents, five brothers, Edwin, Robert, Henry, Gust, and Arthur Fredrick; and two sisters, Helen Schock and Ida Becker.
Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Kathi Frederick, 406 7th St., Lot #9, Britton, SD 57430.
