ELLEN RINAS SKARNAGEL

Funeral Service for Ellen Rinas Skarnagel, 94 of Veblen, SD will be held on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Veblen, SD at 2:00 P.M. with Vicar Karie Geyer officiating. Pallbearers will be all of Ellen’s Family and Friends. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Tekakwitha Living Center Staff. Interment will be in the Veblen Cemetery, Veblen SD. There will be visitation on Thursday at the church from 1:00 P.M. to service time. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Ellen Rinas Skarnagel was born January 14, 1926 to German immigrants, Adolph and Emma (Hopp) Rinas in Roberts County, SD. Ellen was 4th of 9 children. She graduated from Sisseton High School in 1944. After graduation, Ellen traveled to Minneapolis working and saving money to enter the Cadet Nursing School. The Cadet Nursing School program ended in 1945. Due to family needs and sparsity of money, Ellen returned home to Sisseton, letting go of her dream of becoming a nurse and traveling the world. She worked at Stavig’s Department store as a grocery clerk. She later attended New York Hairdressing Academy in Fargo, ND and became a beautician. She worked as a beautician in Mitchell, Milbank, and Sisseton. On December 5, 1953, Ellen married Kenneth Skarnagel. They made their home on a farm in rural Veblen, SD. They were members of the Bethel Lutheran Church, Claire City, SD and Our Saviors Lutheran Church, Veblen, SD. Ellen owned The Country Beauty Salon in her home on the farm along with actively farming with Kenneth. Kenneth passed away suddenly on November 9, 1977. Ellen remained on the farm for 3 years after Kenneth’s death then moved to Veblen. Ellen continued operating The Country Beauty Salon in her Veblen home. In February 2009 she moved to the Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton, SD. Ellen’s family remembers her as a woman with a strong Christian faith and are grateful for the many life lessons that she freely shared. Ellen is survived by two

sisters, Ann Dubois, and Freda Poyet of Sisseton, two daughters, Thea Loy (John) Pallansch, Veblen, SD and Kathy Schweitzer (Mike Ahlemeier), Sioux Falls, SD along with three grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren, Karie (Dave) Geyer, Mahree and Raymond, Veblen, SD, Jennifer (Matt) Nelson, Kinsey and Hunter, Webster, SD and Adam Schweitzer (Abi Sims), Fort Worth, TX.

Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, her parents, three sisters, Anna Rinas, Thelma Eberhardt and Gustie Horton and three brothers, Dan, Michael, and Frank Rinas along with her son in law, John Pallansch.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to all of the staff at Tekakwitha Care Center for the wonderful care provided to Ellen.

Ellen’s family requests that all memorials for Ellen be sent to Tekakwitha Living Center, 6 East Chestnut St., Sisseton, SD. 57262.
