DORIS A. SWEETMILK
Doris A. Sweetmilk, age 95, Veblen, SD, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at the Twin Town Villa in Breckenridge, MN.
Funeral services will be in the spring at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Veblen with Pastor Karie Geyer officiating.
Burial will be in the Veblen Community Cemetery. The Eggers Funeral Home in Rosholt is in charge of the arrangements.
Doris Agnes (Vig) Sweetmilk was born on September 17, 1923, to John and Nellie (Nelson) Vig in rural Veblen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Palestine Lutheran Church.
Doris attended rural school and graduated from Veblen High School. She was also a graduate of Northern State College at Aberdeen, where she received her teaching degree. Upon her graduation from high school, she was employed at Montgomery Ward and Company and at Scott Radio Laboratories in Chicago, IL, for nine years.
On December 8, 1945, Doris was united in marriage to Charles Roy Sweetmilk at Palestine Church. To this union a son, John, was born. They resided in Chicago until 1950, then moved back to Veblen. Doris was a teacher at Fairview (rural) School for three years and then at the Veblen Public Schools. She retired in 1985 after 31 years of teaching.
Doris was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Veblen and was active in WELCA and quilting. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Roy; son, John (Renee) Sweetmilk of Eagan, MN; granddaughters, Rachelle (Tad) Albee of Farmington, MN, Melissa Sweetmilk of Apple Valley, MN, and Megan (Brent) Onan of Frisco, TX; and four great-grandchildren.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents, John and Nellie Vig; and brothers, Syrus, Harris, John Neal, and Roy.
