Denise Caye (Frohling) Krueger, 55, of Hecla, SD, passed away on October 27, 2017, at Sanford Aberdeen Hospital.
Visitation will be held today, Wednesday, November 8, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hecla.
Her funeral will be held on Thursday, November 9, at 10:30 a.m., also at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Burial will be in the Bethlehem Cemetery near Litchville, ND, at 2:00 p.m.
Denise, daughter of Ernest and Elaine (Vitense) Frohling, was born on August 28, 1962, in Aberdeen. She was raised on the family farm west of Hecla and graduated from Hecla High School in 1980.
On March 10, 1979, she united in marriage with Dale Hoikkala. This unity brought the birth of her first born beloved daughter, Danielle.
On September 18, 1982, Denise married the love of her life, Kevin (Wally) Krueger, and together they created two beautiful daughters, Alicia and Jamie. This family of five made their home in Litchville, ND, where Denise held a variety of part-time jobs in the community while staying home to care for her three young girls. Sadly, on August 9, 1992, Kevin passed away; shortly after the family relocated to Hecla.
Denise owned The Roadside Café where she was able to do what she truly loved—cook! She will always be remembered in Houghton for “the smucker sandwich.” She loved to follow her daughters’ basketball careers, never missing a game as she cheered them on with all her heart! In 2003 Denise graduated from college with a degree in drug and alcohol counseling and worked for 10 years at the Dakota Pride Treatment Center, the State of SD Treatment Placement Center and Compass Point Treatment Facility, Sturgis. In 2013 she decided to explore a new career option and went back to school for massage therapy.
Denise was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hecla. She had a heart of gold and was always willing to help anyone if she could. She loved to spend time with her family. Her three girls, sons-inlaw, and grandchildren were by far the greatest joys in her life and she cherished every minute she was able to spend with them. She would move heaven and earth to make them happy. She LOVED to decorate for any holiday, but Christmas was her favorite! There was never a year she didn’t go all out. She loved to spend time with her family, watch any activities in which her grandkids were involved, spending time at her parents’ lake cabin and cook, which usually consisted of food for an entire village! She enjoyed canning, baking, decorating cakes, bowling, her two trips to Hawaii, sewing and making quilts for her grandkids, which will be cherished always! If she wasn’t engaged in those activities, she could very well be found playing cards as she couldn’t turn down an opportunity to play.
Grateful to have shared their life with her are her three daughters: Danielle (Dalton) Daniels, Maizee (fiancé Josh), Jaiden, Samuel and Micah, Watertown; Alicia (Ryan) Bruns, Rennan, Regan, Ryker, Remi and Ramsey, Mellette; and Jamie (Zach) Krueger, Taylor, Aiden and Xander, Spearfish. She is also survived by her mother Elaine Frohling, Hecla; one sister, who was also her best friend, Gayle (Robert) Lloyd, Hecla; three brothers, Larry Frohling, Groton, Joel Frohling, Groton, and Ken (Diane) Frohling, Columbia; her mother-in-law, Bernice Schultz, Jamestown, ND; brother-in-law Loren (Teresa) Krueger, St. Cloud, MN; sister-in-law, Deb (Ken) Hoerth, Lakota, ND; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Kevin Krueger; father, Ernest (Bud) Frohling; niece, Shelby Thayer; and godparents, Stan and Irma Stearns.
