DARLENE PLANTEEN JOHNSON
Darlene Planteen Johnson, a long time Cogswell resident, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2020, at Eventide in Fargo, ND, at the age of 90.
Due to the current restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, a private family graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 2, at Sargent Cemetery of Cogswell. A celebration of life will be planned later this year when restrictions are relaxed.
Darlene Mae Schneider was born on a farm near Britton on March 22, 1930, to Robert and Gertie (Thompson) Schneider. She attended her schooling in Britton and graduated from Britton High School. After graduating high school, she spent three summers at Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen to earn her teaching certificate. She taught in a rural school, Hickman #1, near Langford for two years. For one and half years, she served as Deputy County Superintendent of Schools in Marshall County.
On November 8, 1952, she married Lloyd Planteen and they made their first home in an upstairs apartment of Lloyd’s parent’s home near Langford. In 1953 they moved to the Art Swanson farm northwest of Langford. In the fall of 1955 they moved to the Earl Pierson farm near Fort Sisseton, before moving in 1957 to the Hulda Johnson farm southeast of Britton. After moving every two years, in 1959 they decided to make a permanent home and purchased the Ole Wolstad Farm in southwest Forman Township, northeast of Brampton. Lloyd passed away on September 12, 1993.
On July 5, 1995, Darlene married Vernon Johnson. They made their home in Napoleon, ND. Vernon passed away on May 25, 2007. After Vernon passed, Darlene moved back to Forman where she remained until moving to Fargo Eventide.
Darlene loved gardening and raising chickens. She had a talent for quilting and sewing. Each canning season there would be two walls full of canned goods in her home. She enjoyed baking and each time she made a pan of bars to take to the church, she would make sure to cut a corner square out to test before serving to everyone. For many years she was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church and part of the Nazareth Hope Circle. She also spent many years as a 4-H leader.
She is survived by her children, Dianne (Harley) Anderson, Lyle (Gayle) Planteen, Eldon (Denise) Planteen, Bernard (Penny) Planteen, Julianne (William) Cookson, and Charles (Lisa) Planteen; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Dale (Jean) Johnson and Ted (Mary) Johnson; and her siblings, Gerald (Dorthy) Schneider, Marilyn Likness, and Karen (Roger) St. Sauver.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lloyd; her husband, Vernon; her daughter, Julie Planteen; her brother, Donald Schneider; and her granddaughter, Dana Rose Planteen.
The family is requesting no flower memorials at this time.
Condolences may be directed to the family in care of Bernie Planteen, 12650 95th St. SE, Cogswell, ND 58017.
