ALTHEA G. BROWN
The memorial service for Althea G. Brown was held on Tuesday, February 5, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Britton. Rev. Lloyd Redhage will officiate and spring inurnment will be in the Britton Cemetery.
Althea passed away on Tuesday, January 29, 2019, at Marshall County Health Care Center in Britton at the age of 96.
Her arrangements have been entrusted to the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.
Althea Geneva Quast was born on December 12, 1922, in Britton to Emil and Lillian (Martin) Quast. As a toddler, she moved with her family to Rolla, ND, where her father had been called as a pastor. There she attended school, was confirmed by her father at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, and graduated from Rolla High School. She later attended Aims Community College while living in Greeley, CO. In 1941, Althea moved to Sioux City, IA, where she worked at the Lutheran Hospital.
On March 21, 1943, she was united in marriage with Navy Seaman 1st Class LeRoy A. Brown at Carroll, NE. The next year, while Leroy was serving his country, she started working as a telephone operator in the Port of Embarkation in Newport News, VA. After LeRoy’s discharge, the couple located in Brighton, CO, where Althea worked for the Bell Telephone Co. as a supervisor.
In 1950 they moved to Greeley, CO. For the next 23 years, Althea worked at the Greeley Finance Co. in accounts receivable. Then in 1975, she began working for Weld School’s Credit Union as a loan officer until retiring in 1985.
After LeRoy retired, the couple moved to Britton for a few years, then made their home in Lady Lake, FL ,before returning to Britton in 2005. LeRoy passed away May 16, 2010. The past years Althea has made her home at Spruce Court in Britton.
Being the daughter of a minister, Althea was very active in every church of which she was a member – St. John’s Lutheran in Britton; Trinity Lutheran in Greeley; Bethany Lutheran in Leesburg, FL; and Trinity Lutheran in Lady Lake, FL. She gave freely of her time and talent in serving as a Sunday School teacher, singing in the choir, or being a member and officer in the LWML.
In her retirement years, Althea enjoyed teaching classes in “Writing Your Life,” and was always willing to share her own experiences. She enjoyed crocheting lap robes for nursing homes and making caps for newborns in hospitals. Throughout her life she had always been an avid puzzler and did beautiful needlepoint.
Survivors include two sisters, Doris Hall of Houston, TX, and Lois Pierce of Laramie, WY; a brother, Eugene (Carol) Quast of Charlotte, NC; and a number of nieces, nephews, and their families.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband; three sisters, Corinna (Gordon) Bosse, Mavis (Quinton) Muth, and Vivian Gordon; and one brother, Martin Quast.
