ALEXANDER JOHN TOM

Alexander John Tom departed peacefully at his home on January 15, 2019, while under the loving care of daughter Charlene and Kurt Niemeyer. It was the same home where he and wife, Della, raised their three children.

Alex was born in Pierpont to John Tom and Alma Matilda (Gunderson) Tom on February 1, 1928.

On February 22, 1957, Alex married Della Mae Greenland. They were the proud parents of daughters Christine, Marlene, and Charlene. As a youth growing up in Britton, Alex attended church faithfully with his family. Whether giving or receiving in times of need, the family was always reminded of where it came from.

Alex served in the Navy from 1946-1948 in California as an air traffic controller. After being discharged, he went to trade school for welding and became skilled in working with metal. His 38 year career at Kenworth started in 1953.

His love of baseball caused a migration south to spring training in Mesa, AZ, and frequently was joined by family members and friends. “Let’s hit the road, Della Mae!!” meant coming home to Britton. He was thankful to God for his extended family. Spending time each year talking, laughing, and crying with brothers and sisters, nieces, nephews, and family friends made it feel like they were never really apart.

Grateful for being a part of Alex’s life are daughters Christine (Doug) Dorsey, Marlene (Rob) Cochran, and Charlene (Kurt) Niemeyer, all of Washington, along with grandchildren Kurt, Kristine, and Kelly Niemeyer and Devin, Cullen, Fiona, and Sophie Chockran; also, his brothers Phillip and Roger of Britton and sister Judy Ewings of Britton, and all his extended family, including nieces and nephews.

Alex was preceeded in death by parents John and Alma Tom; wife Della Mae; brothers Reuben, Carmen, Ivan, and Jerry; and sisters Marion Mydland and Darlene Selle.

We will miss his guiding light, playful humor, calming presence, and the way he valued all people that crossed his path. His final wish for all can be found in Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who trust in Him.”
