Adelaide Swanson, a long time Langford area resident, peacefully passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2020, at The Neighborhoods, Brookings, at the age of 99. Her daughters were at her side.

A spring memorial service and interment will be held at Highlanda Lutheran Church, Langford, SD.

Adelaide Anna Malpert Swanson was born on January 10, 1921, on their farm near Amherst, SD, the fourth child of John Herman and Emma Mary Malpert. As a child she grew up on the family farm near Straubville, ND.

After completing her education, Adelaide and Cousin Lucille Foote Green, spent five years first working in Aberdeen and then in the offices at John Morrell in Sioux Falls.

On April 16, 1949, she married Carl Bernard Swanson. They lived in the Langford farming community where they raised their family. They were members of Highlanda Lutheran Church. Adelaide remained in the Langford Community until December 2010 when she moved to Brookings and lived at Park Place Assisted Living.

She was active in the Marco Extension Club since its beginning in the early 1950’s and was a faithful member of Highlanda Lutheran Church, active as a Sunday School teacher and Women of the ELCA.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Swanson (Chuck Dupraz) of Brookings and Carla Swanson Durkee (Mike Durkee) of Iowa City; five grandchildren Ian Durkee (Jessica), Chicago, Allison Durkee (Jamie Forst), Chicago, Anna Durkee Giesting (Sam) of Indianapolis, IN, Cassye Durkee, San Francisco, and Zach (Caitlin) Schwartz of Seattle, WA; nine great-grandchildren; brother, John Malpert (special friend Mary Schulz); many nieces and nephews and their families; and special cousin and friend Lucille Green, Sioux Falls.

Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; a son-in-law Gary Schwartz; four brothers and four sisters-in-law Rudolph (Gladys), Marvin (Ester), Herman (Elsie), and Otto (Edith); brother-in-law Rudolph Swanson and sister-in-law Mildred Swanson.
