Opposition To Request

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 80 hosted the American Legion on their 103rd birthday as well as the winners of the ALA Americanism 2022 Essay and Poem contest. The first place winning essays and poems went on to District competition. The local winners in front left to right are Jake Zuehlke, NaKaya Stark, and Alexys Olson. Back row Ethan Denholm, Kaylie Trevithick, Navaeh Jones, Priscilla Mercado, Cecilia Anderson, McKenzie Cease, Ella Bray, and Rae Ann Hagenson. Not pictured are Natalie Treeby, Abigail Lee, Mataya Knecht, and Jordan Andre. Cease, Denholm, and Anderson all placed first in the district contest in Class 4, 5, and 6 respectively, and Treeby was third in Class 3.

Opposition To Request

Despite some opposition, the Marshall County Commission approved a request from Marshall Dairy to increase cattle numbers in its two dairies near Veblen by 2,500 head at its regular meeting on Tuesday.

DOT Needs Borrow Site

In 2024, the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) plans to begin a construction project on S.D. Highway 10 from Britton to approximately one-half mile west of Houghton, and it is looking for a site to provide fill.

Elli (Seidler) Nelson was born on Dec. 10, 1930, in a small farm community much like Veblen, near a border like North Dakota. She attended a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade. The only difference is that her hometown is 4,800 miles away, in what was then called East Prussia, and was then an isolated province of Germany. It is now part of Poland, by the border of Lithuania.
