Trail Of Spirits Work at Sica

This time of year, many people are flocking to Sica Hollow State Park in northeast South Dakota. The brilliant fall colors bring visitors from near and far to enjoy the scenery. At present, the colorful leaves are not the only feature in the park that is changing. The well-known Trail of Spirits is undergoing some work currently thanks to several special helping hands.

Honoring Those Who Served

A veteran’s memorial is planned for the Britton Cemetery. The cemetery board decided on a design that features six five-foot soldier statues, one representing each branch of the military. The board added that public support for the memorial is appreciated. People can contact Britton City Hall at 605-448-5721 or mail a check to the city at PO Box 126, Britton SD 57430.

Honoring Those Who Served

Almost 500 veterans are buried in the Britton Cemetery, including 12 that were killed in action. As someone who has researched and worked on cemetery matters for years, that fact struck Marie Marlow, Britton’s long-time finance manager. Even more concerning to Marlow was that these departed soldiers do not have anything to memorialize them at the cemetery. A few years back, Marlow began working on a project to rectify that problem.

Council OKs Water/Sewer Project Bid

The Britton City Council held a special meeting on Monday night. Bids for the Industrial Park Water and Sewer Improvement project were opened early that day. Chris Pederson from ISG presented the Council with the bids. Only one bid was received from Dahme Construction Co in the amount of $172,660.55. Although this is above the Engineer’s estimate, Pederson told the Council it is not out of the ordinary based on the increase price of materials, labor, etc. and their recommendation is to award the contract to Dahme Construction.

The 24th Annual Heart of Dakota Award winners were recognized at a reception and awards presentation at the Britton Country Club Monday night. This year’s recipients from left to right are Vicky Hoines and Shelly Steiner, People’s Choice Winners; Gail Smith and Helen Nice of Britton Senior Nutrition, the Customer Service winners, Rhonda Wade, the Community Involvement honoree and Logan Smith, the Agribusiness winner.

With the 2022 midterm elections approaching soon, a vast majority of South Dakotans feel that our nation has become less civil — and they place the responsibility for improving civility on a variety of institutions and individuals, including themselves, according to a new statewide poll.
