Michelle Peters of rural Britton demonstrated last week what happens when you toss boiling water into a very cold environment. The hot water quickly condenses into water droplets, essentially turning into steam but looks like snow. The temperatures ranged from -12 to -22 the day Peters performed this trick.

It was a(nother) storm for the ages last week in much of South Dakota. First ice and slush, mix in some freezing fog and then over a foot snow plus a light 30 mile per hour breeze. Throughout the week, the area saw an ice warning, winter weather advisories then warnings, and the granddaddy of them, the dreaded blizzard warning.

City Appoints Engineer

At their meeting Monday evening, the Britton City Council discussed the appointment of a city engineer. Chris Peterson of ISG explained that it is good for a municipality to have someone on staff for everyday questions related to infrastructure and small projects. Having a city engineer would mean that the city would not have to enter into a new contract for every small thing or go through the proposal process, Peterson explained. An appointed engineer could do all of that for a lower per hour cost as well. The council went on to appoint Peterson as their City Engineer.
