Educators Learn From “Kid Whisperer”

As they prepare for the upcoming school year, educators in the Britton-Hecla School District and beyond spent some time learning themselves under the tutelage of a distinguished guest recently. Scott Ervin, a nationally recognized educational consultant, conducted an inservice in Britton a couple of weeks ago.

Ervin is known as the ‘Kid Whisperer.’ He is a former elementary teacher, principal, superintendent, and discipline specialist. He has written a best-selling book and syndicated advice column. Ervin now regularly travels the country conducting training sessions at schools. His focus is classroom behavioral leadership. According to Ervin’s website, the training provides a “comprehensive way of creating a calm, loving, inclusive, equitable environment where students can learn, be engaged, feel safe, and love being in the classroom.”

At the two-day training in Britton, educators learned about behavior management. BH Elementary Principal Kyla Richter said, “That skill is so important in a classroom setting. Without a systematic approach to addressing behaviors, both big and small, teaching and learning are affected significantly.”

B-H teachers and staff were joined by other educators from other districts at the in-service, including Sisseton, Rosholt, Wilmot, and Fargo.

“When we came across a school in South Dakota who invited Scott Ervin in to instruct their teachers, we decided to piggyback off that and have him join us in Britton,” explained Richter. “It was a packed two days of learning, and I can say it was well worth it. At Britton-Hecla, we have an array of successful teaching styles, classroom management tactics and everything in between. Mr. Ervin was able to add to the importance of relationship-building and how to maintain control, while keeping your teacher/student relationship intact.”

Ervin will return in October to follow-up.
