Board Discusses Numbers Issue
Seven people participated in an open forum discussion about girls basketball at the regular meeting of the Britton-Hecla Board of Education on Monday.
Allison Tank, Emily Taylor, Angela Grupe, Courtney
Erickson, Jon Anderson and MJ Hrabik discussed the issue of low numbers in the girls program this season.
“We just don’t have enough numbers to play both a junior varsity and varsity schedule,” said BH Superintendent Steve Benson. “The lack of numbers has put us in a bad situation, and there really is no good answer. We talked about a number of different options like playing a full JV schedule and no varsity, or varsity and no JV. The board weighed in on it, but we basically let the coaches and athletic department tell us what they wanted to do.”
The decision was made to not play a junior varsity schedule this season and to play varsity only. Last year the school also did not play junior varsity games.
In other action approved an update of school policies dealing with requisition and classified leave, declared kitchen equipment as surplus and will have it appraised, and accepted resignation from head football coach Pat Renner and paraprofessional Kassie Breitkreutz.
The board also approved hiring Eric Wegleitner as the interim assistant boys basketball coach, and approved an unpaid leave request from Don Monsen for two to three weeks.
Regan Ringkob, who earned two superiors at the state oral interpretation contest, performed a selection for the board.
The board met in executive session on personnel for an hour and 47 minutes and took no action .
